The rising Sun

"Siva pujaku..." the song from the eternal classic Swarnakamalam has always been one of those songs I listen to when I feel a little low. This does not mean that the lyrics are all meant to be inspiring but there is a something in them that has always inspired me or consoled me.When I first wanted to write about this song and ggogled for the lyrics I was astonished as to see that lots of people have already written about it.

Even though it sounds like a duet it's more like an argument between the hero and the heroine who have a completely different outlook to life and their future. Sri Seetarama Sastry garu, the writer who penned the song believes that it is by far his toughest task and the wordplay in the song has no parallels in conveying the meaning of the situation the actors find themselves in. Yet off late I've found a completely new meaning to the song and very important lesson that can be drawn from it.

The lyrics :

Padamara padagalapai merise thaaralakai
Raathrini varinchake sandhyaa sundhari
Thoorupu vedhikapai vekuva narthakivai
Dhaathrini muripinche kaanthulu chindani
Nee kadalika chaithanyapu srikaaram kaani
Nidhurinchina hrudhaya ravali omkaaram kaani

Their meaning in the context of the film (copied from http://musicmavericks.blogspot.in/2007/09/ode-to-art-by-sirivennela.html) :

For the sake of shining stars on the hoods of the west(heroine wants to go to foreign country in this film),
don't embrace the night(darkness) o evening beauty;
on the stage of the east, by becoming a dance of the dawn,
do delight the earth by sprinkling light;
let your movements be an initiation for consciousness;
let the sleeping eeshwara (lord of dance) in your heart become an omkaaram (symbol of piousness, god, ultimate)

Their universal meaning :

Like the setting Sun that is drawn into the beauty of the night by the poisonous hoods of the West, don't fall into the trap and become dormant.
Be like the rising Sun that dances in the East, inspire the world by your brilliance and radiate your thoughts everywhere.
Let your every step be a new dawn and awaken the sleeping souls.

There are many other brilliant works by Sastry garu but this has got to be one of his best.Truly inspirational.
Salutes to the legend.

Poem from Udaan

Udaan a simple coming of age story of Rohan, a small town boy who wants to be a writer against his father's wishes who wants him to be an engineer. The movie is filled with so many cherish-able moments and filled with some of the best acting that one may be excused for not noting that most of the actors are making a debut with this film. Though it was not an immediate success it's one of the movies that will attain a cult status later for sure.

Here's one of my favourite poems from the movie :

Jo Lehron se aage nazar dekh paati
to tum jaan lete,
main kya sochta hoon.

Vo avaaj tumko  bhed jaati
to tum sochte, main kya sochta hoon.

Zid ka tumhara jo parda sarakti
khidkiyon se aage bhi tum dekh paate.

Aankhon se aadato ki palke hatate
to tum jaan lete, main kya sochta hoon.

Meri tarah hota agar khud par zara bharosa
to kuchh door tum bhi saath saath aate.

Rang meri aankhon ka baantte zara sa
to kuch door tum bhi aate saath saath aate.

Nasha aasma ka jo choomta tumhe bho,
hasrate tumhari naya janm paati;
khud doosre janm me meri udaan
chhoone kuchh door tum bhi saath saath aate.

Maybe it never was....

It was so good,
until it turned bad
may be it never was good.

There was so much between us,
until there was nothing
may be there never was a thing.

When I was up all night,
I thought you were up for me as well,
may be it was only me that was awake at night.

All I could think about was you,
until all I wanted was to forget you
may be I never wanted you.
